Fusion Boutique Presents – ‘Metro Social’ with RACHEL BAIMAN BAND (Nashville) + Special Guests Piccolo Bear in Concert

Sunday 7th January, 2018
TIME: 5:00pm – 9:00pm
in the Upstairs Lounge

Americana Songwriter & Multi-Instrumentalist Rachel Baiman Tours Stunning New Record “Shame”
“A rootsy wake-up call” — Folk Alley

In many ways for Rachel, Shame, is an exploration of growing up female in America. Despite the serious subject matter, the overall tenor of the album remains light while the arrangements depart from her stripped-down work with progressive folk duo 10 String Symphony. In addition to the release of her new solo album, Baiman is the co-founder of a new political group called Folk Fights Back, a musician-led national organization that puts together benefit concerts and awareness events in response to the Trump administration. As a teenager, Baiman found music to be a welcome escape from worrying about global politics. “I often found the constant discussion of seemingly unsolvable problems to be intense and overwhelming, and when I moved to Nashville to pursue music it felt like something positive, beautiful and productive that I could put into the world. Now that I’ve had some years to devote to music,”—Baiman has been recording and touring internationally for the past 4 years with 10 String Symphony, and has played fiddle for numerous other artists including Kacey Musgraves and Winnipeg folk band Oh My Darling—“I find it hard to escape from the values that I grew up with, and I feel compelled to write politically, to speak out about things that I’ve experienced or seen. Songwriting is a unique opportunity to do that, because it avails a more emotional vehicle for discussion. I love the political tradition of folk music, from Woody Guthrie to Tupac, and my hope is that this record adds another voice to it.”

“A goose-bump-instigating talent that reminded me of a young Gillian Welch or Joy Williams (Civil Wars).” – Z. N. Lupetin, The Bluegrass Situation.

Opening the night will be Blue Mountains Duo Piccolo Bear.
Piccolo Bear are a folk bluegrass duo Vanessa Caspersz and Daniel Di Biase from the Blue Mountains. Their unique sound blends dark and sweet harmonies with banjo, ukulele and guitar.

Wednesday 10th January, 2018
TIME: 5:30pm – 9:00pm

The blues and roots music duo Joe Filisko and Eric Noden make an unforgettable impression. Their jaw-dropping virtuosity enables them to create more layers of sound and feeling than most full bands can summon, and both are high-energy, ultra-rhythmic performers. The collective result, in both their live shows and their recordings are charged, dramatic performances that are simultaneously powerful and sophisticatedly subtle.

Joe Filisko is a master of all the classic blues harmonica styles. As Dennis Gruenling of Blues Review says, “Joe Filisko could be the best prewar blues harmonica stylist in the world today.”
Eric Noden is a master bluesman in his own right. Deeply rooted in the music of 20’s & 30’s blues pioneers, Eric Noden’s percussive guitar work, timeless song writing and well-traveled blues vocals have earned the respect of audiences, critics, and musicians worldwide.

“Two marvellous musicians who have captured not only the sounds but the emotional spirit of some of the richest bloodlines of American music.” — Kim Field, author of Harmonicas, Harps, and Heavy Breathers

Fusion Boutique Presents – ‘Metro Social’ with PHILLIP HENRY & HANNAH MARTIN ‘Edgelarks’ (UK) in Concert

Wednesday 17th January, 2018
TIME: 5:30pm – 9:00pm
in the Upstairs Lounge

Edgelarks fly in on the tailwind of BBC award winning duo Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin. The new band name comes with a new project, taking the roots of their previous work – British traditional musics, Indian classical slide guitar, stomping roots beatbox harmonica party; adds a strong stem of original writing; and runs wilder with each gig.
The new album, also called Edgelarks, concerns the liminal: borders, crossroads, travellers, refugees, twilight, dawn. In large part written during their travels in Australia in 2016, the album takes inspiration from new horizons, new stories, spacious landscapes. A key song, Signposts, was directly written as a celebration of their time in Tasmania; a travellers anthem imbued with a touch of homesickness, but alight with the excitement of adventure, and the special connections music can make with others, even when you are a world away from home.
Edgelarks takes the idea that thresholds, despite often being places of marginalisation, are also places of change – and therefore places of hope. That in the end, we have far more in common than things that divide us, because we are all liminal – we are all just passing through.

Fusion Boutique Presents – ‘Metro Social’ with THE GOOD LOVELIES (CANADA) in Concert

Wednesday 4th April, 2018
TIME: 5:30pm – 9:00pm
in the Upstairs Lounge

JUNO and four-time CFMA Award Winners the ‘Good Lovelies’ return to Australia.

You’ve got a plan. It’s yours to make. It’s yours to break. You can own it, spin it, build it and smash it. You can write it down. You can shake it up. You can change your mind. You can burn the plan.
With Burn The Plan a long-awaited new album, Good Lovelies are both fulfilling and defying their so-called musical destiny as a “folk trio.” What makes this Burn The Plan special is that the band’s considerable strengths – winsome song writing, impeccable vocals, and triangulated charisma – don’t tell the full story. There’s a new spirit of adventurousness that gives Burn The Plan an extra spark; the album is permeated with textures and tones from musical worlds away. This time around, the trio has spent time developing, expanding and honing their sound as musicians first, and as Good Lovelies second. These new songs were crafted not to ‘fit’ the band’s catalogue per se, but to exercise some autonomy from the confines of genre and tradition. The band is still playing, but not always to type, you might say.
Burn The Plan is a study in how individual voices find common ground in such a tight-knit group dynamic. What keeps the three Lovelies making music together is not just their uncanny vocal compatibility; it’s their unshakeable friendships, which supports each member contributing to the song writing in distinct ways. The story behind Burn The Plan is something of a contradiction – while each Lovely contributed their most personal songs to date, each song is filtered through a unique process of collaboration that characterises the band’s entire M.O, where the final result is really and truly equal.
2011’s Juno-nominated Let The Rain Fall was the last time the Good Lovelies released a full-length studio album. It may not feel so long ago, since the band’s profile has continued to grow with awards, steady and sold-out touring, and a live album in between, but you can do a whole lotta living, loving and letting go in four years. For Caroline Brooks, Kerri Ough and Sue Passmore, four years has been the exact number of hours, moments and experiences needed to take the next step, to burn the plan.
